Situated on Main Street in downtown Madison, Old Black Bear Brewing Company is deceptively small from the outside. But once inside you’ll see that the ‘Bear is not so small at all. In fact, it spans three very large rooms plus an expansive patio. It includes a bar inside and tiki-like bar outside. The building itself has a lot of character.

There are full size couches and an older upright piano – not sure if the piano is just for show -- but it adds to the ambiance. Our destination this Friday night: the patio to hear singer-songwriter Jennifer Kaye McClure perform.

We were cheerfully greeted upon entering. Once on the patio we sat near a fire pit sans fire as it was 80 degrees outside.

The patio is large – very large – and consists of a variety of seating arrangements from picnic tables to lounge chairs to the wraparound bench perfectly situated to hear Jennifer’s music straight-on. On the patio’s far end are outdoor games like corn hole.  There’s also a small bar area.  The sight of two dogs on a leash lead us to believe that Old Bear is pet friendly. We like that.

There’s a large raised stage big enough for a full band.  Old Black Bear has music each Friday night as of this writing. They tend to have solo acts perhaps to keep the energy level dialed down a notch so patrons can enjoy conversation and a good meal.

Speaking of a good meal, we ordered lemon-seasoned chicken wings (comes with shoe string fries as one option) while Annabelle choose the “Adult Mac and Cheese”. (What Mac & Cheese isn’t for adults???). Annabelle also enjoyed a couple of Old Black Bear's brews.

I loved the wings – the lemon added a kick to them. They were cooked just right and not overdone and not the underfed variety that I sometimes come across. Yum.

Annabelle complemented the Mac & Cheese from a gourmet cook’s perspective. And the brews.

Above: My lemon-seasoned wings with shoe fries. The wings were A+. Note: the food pictures were taken in low-light conditions and don't quite do the food justice. Both meals looked better than these photos imply.

Price-wise you be the judge by examining their Old Black Bear Brewing Company food menu. For all we received that night – Jennifer McClure’s music, a well-spaced patio (we sometimes feel like sardines packed in some venues… not here…) and great service it was an evening’s entertainment and conversation; well worth it.

We'll be back.
